Purple plus mattress review: I've never slept better

Purple Plus Mattress, Queen Size ($1,899)

A Purple Plus mattress is best for:

I’m a rolling sleeper that shares my bed with one to four animals every night, including a Yorkie that likes to spoon me and a cat that likes to sleep on my feet. Most mornings, I wake up feeling achy and hot, and I could never tell if it was because I let my animals dictate what position I slept in or if it as because I had far passed that 10-year mark for a mattress.

After sleeping on a Purple mattress for the last 30 days, I can confidently say my old mattress was overdue for a trip to the dumpster. My back pain has subsided and I’m waking up more refreshed. I'm also not waking up drenched in sweat anymore.

The mattress comes with two sleep masks, two Purple Squishys, an instruction guide, and a box cutter to open the mattress bag.

There are so many companies that will deliver a mattress in a box right to your front door. Gone are the days of needing to go to the mattress store to pick one out — you can order it online and have it come to you. Purple is a unique brand, that made a name for itself with an interesting design and silly commercials.

Purple mattresses are made with a GelFlex Grid (AKA that purple squishy layer, which is probably what you know Purple for). The grid provides firm support for your back and optimal softness for pressure relief. The GelFlex Grid is made of hyper-elastic material that reduces pressure, provides support, and instantly adapts as you move. It also is a good cooling mattress option, as the Grid design doesn’t trap body heat.

The Purple Plus mattress is a multi-level mattress comprised of:

The company isn’t lying, this design really meshes together firm support with soft memory foam comfort. It is soft to the touch but firm enough to support your body while you sleep.

FexEx dropped this off on my doorstep, without even ringing the bell. I had to lug it inside on my own.

When your mattress arrives, you’ll find written instructions for the setup process, along with a prompt to check out Purple’s how-to video.

Be warned, the Purple mattress just… arrives. Don’t expect white glove delivery. Your old mattress is not taken away for you. This is a budget-friendly brand (when buying one of the lower-tier mattresses) and thus, some things will be indicative of that. My mattress came via FedEx (my most hated delivery service). The driver didn’t even ring the bell, so I have no clue how long it had been sitting on my doorstep.

Now, I’ve already implied that this a "mattress in a box," and that was a bit of a lie. Purple is a mattress in a bag. Which is better than a box, because it is a bag that comes with handles.

If you live alone, you’re going to need to call a friend as soon as the mattress is delivered — unless your stubbornness briefly takes over your body as mine did. In that case, you might be like me and find the nerve to drag this thing into your apartment and up the stairs to get it to your bedroom. Be advised: that is not smart, because the Purple Plus mattress weighs 111 pounds.

I'd recommend the following steps:

After that, you’ll be able to use the mattress right away! And after carrying that inside, you’ll definitely want to take a nap.

The Purple Plus mattress is made of: a SoftFlex cover, 2” Purple GelFlex Grid, 2” Premium Comfort Foam, and two levels of Original Comfort Foam.

I am usually a pretty picky person when it comes to sleeping. I often hate sleeping away from home, because I never sleep great in a hotel or at anyone else’s house. I was pleasantly surprised by the Purple mattress.

I am a rolling sleeper. Throughout the night I sleep on both sides and on my back. I used to toss and turn a lot due to back pain. I have a memory foam pillow that I reviewed that is perfect for my sleeping patterns. After my first night of sleeping on this new mattress, I woke up like a literal baby. I was on my back, with my arms above my head and drool on my pillow. It was a great night’s rest. I wasn't sweaty like I used to be. I felt well-rested and comfortable.

Purple Mattress Price: Queens starting at $1,399

Depending on the model of the mattress, you can get a Queen Purple mattress for as low as $1,399 (for the standard model) or as much as $3,799 (for the Purple Hybrid Premier 4). For this review, I tested the Purple Plus, which retails for $1,899.

My cat, Luna, is a huge fan of the new mattress and was the first one to take a nap on it.

Once I had some assistance, the mattress inflates in 1-2-3. You can watch Purple’s how-to video for setting up your mattress, but it really is so simple. You break open the plastic wrapping (using the provided safe box cutter) and then unroll it on the bed. You’ll definitely need two sets of hands for this.

Unlike mattresses from places like Nectar and IKEA, you can use a Purple mattress right away. Some other mattress brands need to inflate for anywhere from 24 to 72 hours. Once you put your sheets on your Purple mattress, you can get to sleep.

Many mattress companies recommend a 30-day adjustment window to get used to a new mattress. I don’t know if my previous mattress was just that worn-in and old, but this new mattress was instantly more comfortable and my first night of sleep was perfect — I woke up without any back or hip pain. 30+ days later, I am still waking up rested, comfortable, cool, and happy.

I’ve only had this mattress for a month, but so far it is very simple and easy to clean. I have a mattress protector (I’ve got four very furry animals), so that does most of the heavy lifting. Otherwise, I vacuum the mattress every other week using my Dyson to get some of the extra dirt and dander out.

The SoftFlex cover top is very soft to the touch and doesn't sag when you're sleeping on it.

The biggest and only con is probably a common complaint about box mattresses: If you aren’t putting this mattress on the first floor, it will probably be difficult for you to get any boxed mattress inside on your own.

If you live alone, getting the mattress inside and set up is hard. Since this comes in a bag with handles, I was at least able to drag it up the stairs and into my bedroom. If I still lived on the third floor, forget it, I would never have gotten this inside alone. I thankfully only needed to get this up one set of stairs. I definitely risked hurting myself in doing this, so I would not advise setting up a Purple mattress alone.

I couldn’t lift the mattress on my own onto the bed. I had to wait until someone was able to come over to help me set it up, as it was too heavy for me to handle on my own. But thankfully, I had my 18-year-old niece coming over the same day and she helped set it up in exchange for cupcakes.

While I did not experience any issues, I’d be remiss not to mention some people have mentioned that they find it is less effective for individuals over 230 pounds. Even the Sleep Foundation found merit to that claim for the Purple mattress. This issue has been flagged about the original and most basic model. I reviewed the Purple Plus, which has an extra 2” Premium Comfort Foam layer that the basic model does not have.

Purple says there is no weight limit but recommends 300 per person or 600 per mattress.
