On Tuesday, deputies with the Independence County Sheriff’s Department assisted Arkansas Department of Correction, Division of Community Correction agents with a home visit of a parolee with an active search waiver.

While conducting a home visit of Brent Hughes, 30, at a residence on Reed Road in Pleasant Plains, agents found Hughes in a room in the carport attached to the residence. According to the incident report, Hughes tried to shut the door to the room, then exited the room and fled on foot to the rear of the residence, where he was taken into custody by agents.

Officers noted the smell of marijuana in the room, and found a bucket containing a green leafy substance, a vacuum sealer and three vacuum-sealed bags of the green leafy substance. There were additional vacuum-sealable bags and a digital weighing scale. The marijuana weighed at more than four ounces, but less than 25 pounds, with an estimated value of $4,000. Hughes was taken to the Independence County Detention Center. Hughes is being charged with misdemeanor fleeing, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of Schedule 6 substance with intent to deliver.

A bench warrant has been issued for Robert Eddie Walter, 39, of Batesville, for possession of meth or cocaine less than 2 grams, a class D felony, and tampering with evidence of an investigation, a class D felony. Walter is being charged as a habitual offender having previously been convicted of four or more felonies. At 1:16 a.m. March 30, deputies with the Independence County Sheriff’s Office were driving on North Central Avenue when they saw a blue 2011 Nissan Altima that appeared to not have a license plate. A traffic stop was initiated. Deputies noted the car had a paper tag that was not secured on the bottom, allowing it to fold upwards while driving. The driver, Robert Edward Walter, 39, of Batesville, was found to have an active absconder warrant. He was patted down and taken to the Independence County Detention Center. Walter advised deputies he had a pipe in his sock. A glass smoking device with burnt white residue present was found. Deputies asked Walter if that was all the contraband he had, to which he stated, “Yes.”

Afterwards, deputies searched the transport area of the patrol car and located two plastic bags containing a white crystalline substance consistent with methamphetamine under the seat. The total weight of the two bags was 1.12 grams. Bond has been set at $5,000.
