From choosing the right suitcase to filling your travel pillow, these viral TikTok packing hacks will help you save space, time and money.

On 23rd March 2022, major airlines Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2 announced that passengers are only allowed to take one piece of hand luggage on the plane, free of charge. 

The weight and dimensions of your hand luggage will vary depending on the airline, but your chosen bag must fit under the seat in front of you, wheels and handles included. 

If you’re all about combatting some of those airport queues and avoiding additional fees whilst flying, Casumo have scoured the internet and put together some top tips to help you fit more into your hand luggage. 

Let’s explore these packing hacks, so you can travel for less.

Roll your clothes  The age-old debate of whether to roll or fold your clothes has been solved. Rolling your clothes will not only save space but reduce the number of creased outfits when you unpack.

Use a packing cube Laura, best known as @scorpionbabygirl to her TikTok followers, has proven that if you’re a long-term traveller, you can still fly with just your hand luggage thanks to the use of a packing cube. She managed to fit eight months’ worth of clothes into a single cube! 

Use a clothes organiser This ‘one step pack and unpack travel hack’ by @lorafied went viral — changing the packing game by simply folding your clothes into an organiser, then placing it into your suitcase. When you reach your destination, you can simply hang up all your clothes in one fell swoop. 

Fill your travel pillow Upon refusing to pay additional charges on her trip to Las Vegas, @anayotothe took to TikTok to share how she got creative and removed all the stuffing from her neck pillow, filling it with additional clothes. Why not give it a go on your next flight? 

The vacuum trick Much like using a compression bag, by rolling your clothes into bin bags and using the vacuum nozzle to suck out excess air, you’ll save up to four times the amount of room in your bag! 

The pregnancy hack A very sneaky way to save space, Ashlin, known as @miniadventures on TikTok, took packing hacks to another level when she created a fake baby bump using a drawstring bag filled with clothes. She even got priority boarding due to her ‘pregnancy’! Would you dare to try this hack? 

Bag inside of a bag trick By packing your items into small bags before placing these inside a bigger bag, you can take as many bags as you’d like on your trip, as long as they all fit inside your biggest bag of carry-on luggage. These are great for packing shoes and even storing dirty laundry for the journey back.

Shoes in a shower cap Much like packing chargers, socks and tops inside of your hat to consolidate space, use shower caps to secure your shoes for a space-efficient way to keep the rest of your luggage clean. You could even pack some bits and pieces inside your shoes to really make the most of the space. 

Taking toiletries When travelling with hand luggage, you will be limited to the amount of fluids you can take on the flight. Make sure all your toiletries fit within the Government guidelines. 

You should have no more than 100ml in each container, and you will not be able to take more than a litre in total. 

To save space, buy your toiletries when you reach your destination.

The jewellery hack To prevent your necklaces and bracelets from arriving in a tangled mess, pack them in individual small zip-top bags with part of the necklace in the zipper and the rest hanging neatly in the bag. Rings and earrings can slot neatly into a pill organiser.
